Ran Seilforening are proud to announce that Weather Routing Inc is the official weather provider for the World Championship for Zoom 8.
WRI is the world leader in marine weather forecasting, providing forecasts and routing to a wide variety of clients, including: races, regattas, rallies, fishing tournaments, yachts, cargo ships, cruise lines, and marinas. All products are customized to each client and are produced by degreed and certified meteorologists with over a century of combined experience.
Forecasts will be provided each day from 01 through 07 August inclusive, with each forecast to be sent by 0600 CET, and covering the time period from 1100 - 1700 CET of individual race days. This will be linked under race info in the menu to the left here at the webpage and also posted daily on the official note board.

We have received some questions on why there all entrants must be 13 years or older.
Notice of race 1.2 refer to a Norwegian Confederation of Sports regulation that says that all entrants must be 13 years old or more in the year of the championship.

Most of the Z8 sailors from Ran Seilforening later activities has been preparations for the Worlds. This weekend the did something new. Emilie, Marte, Malin, Inger Margrete and Alexander went to Glesvær to ride the ocean waves of the North Sea. In 15-23 knots of wind they found escellent surfing conditions between Golta and Marsteinen. The sailors had lots of fun in waves that rose up to 3 meters height. Afterwards bathing and food in a small bay.

Opening ceremony - program

The programme for the opening ceremony August 2nd is now ready.
The Towns Hall of Fjell Municipality will stage the first part of the opening ceremony.
1745 Everybody ready at the Municipal parking lot for the opening Ceremony
1800 Opening Ceremony will start inside the Municipal building
After opening ceremony all nations line up outside the Municipal building for the Parade to Sartor Center.
Food will be served to all sailors and coaches. Parents and relatives will be offered special prices at the restaurants in the Shopping Center.
Approximately 2000 End of the Opening Ceremony. Meeting point for Sailors and Coaches where the Parade ended.

The deadline for the completion of the endtry form (NOR 3.2) is now shortened from July 22nd to July 1st.
This is done to ensure the quality of the planning and preparation of the organizing authority.
Fantastic conditions on training camp

From May 18th to may 20th Ran Seilforening arranged a 3 days training camp with ca. 60 sailors in Optimist, Zoom and Laser dinghies.
The weather was great with up to 27 degrees C. The 10 Zoom boats managed to get a lot of practise and had a great long weekend.

Ran-sailor wins winter-film competition

With 34 % of the votes Zoom sailor David Westervik from Ran Seilforening won Norwegian sailing magazine "Seilmagasinet" film competition. The criterias for the competition was that the film should show enjoying winter sailing.

There will be an unofficial Zoom 8 World Championship in team racing on the spareday for the Worlds, August 7th.
The races will be kept close to the harbour so spectators can follow the races from inside and outside of the Clubhouse.

Strong Ran-results in the European Championship

A team of 4 sailors from Ran Seilforening participated in the European Championship in Italiy along with 80 other sailors. This resulted in silver and bronze medal.
Thomas Nicholaysen came second and got the silver and David Westervik came third and got the bronze. The other two sailors from Ran: Emilie Kathrin Vabø became number six in the girls class and Alexander Dahl Høgheim came 11th among the boys.

Four Ran-sailors to Ligano

A team of four sailors from Ran Seilforening participates in the European Championship in Ligano in Italy.
David Westervik, Thomas Nicholaysen, Emilie Kathrin Vabø and Alexander Dahl Høgheim travels to Italiy to participate in the European Championship 2013 for Zoom8. There are 79 entries and Lignano Sabbiadoro, east of Venzia is the venue.

Ran is very happy to announce that Helmuth Gelmini will be the chief equipment inspector for the Worlds.
Helmuth Gelmini (AUT) is a member of the IZCA Technical Committee and has long experience has an international measurer (IM). The measurements will take place at Thursday August 1st from 10.00-18.00 hrs and Friday August 2nd from 09.00-18.00 hrs.

Ran Seilforening informs all competitors that due to technical limitations in our online payment solution we must ask for the entry fee in Norwegian kroner (NOK) instead of Euros (EUR), as stated in the Notice of Race.

All competitors will be charged in their local currency. The amount 1350 NOK is based on exchange rate from Norges Bank (Norways central bank) on March 1st 2013 and is corresponding to 180 EUR. The extra fee for late entries will be rounded off to 400 NOK.

Patrik Schander has been appointed as Race Officer for the Zoom8 World Championship.
Ran Seilforening is proud to present Patrik as the Race Officer. He is an International Race Officer (IRO) and is the secretary in the Swedish Sailing Federation Race Management Committee. His responsibilities in the committee are rules, regulations and questions from Class Associations.

Under 2012 he was the Race Officer at 6mR EC, Farr 30 Worlds and many more regattas in Sweden and abroad.
IZCA-president Anita Yngve visits Ran

January 20th, president of IZCA, Anita Yngve, visited Ran Seilforening and met the organizing comittee.

Winter training in january

18 Zoom8 sailors from all over Norway (and Russia) og 12 local optimist sailors participated in this weekends winter training. A stabile high pressure system over Western Norway ensured beautiful weather, but unfortunately no wind...
It was a good training session despite little wind. The sailors did pratice balancing the the boat and different low-wind-techniques. They also did some on-shore training as well.
The sailors lived in the old club house Ranheim and were having a good time saturday night with playing cards and watching a movie.
Next weekend training will be february 9-10th. This training will be open for all Zoom8-sailors.
Report from a sunny Bergen

As President of IZCA (International Zoom8 Class Association), I visited Ran Seilforening in Bergen the last weekend, to meet with the organizing club and go through the conditions for a successful World Championship in Zoom8 2013.
What you see in the picture is the club pier and 17 Zoom8 sailors, mostly from Bergen but also from other parts of Norway and a Russian sailor. The club has organized a weekend training camp with coach Anna from Russia and coach Magnus from Norway.
This day there was little wind because it was so wonderful sunny weather and the coaches adjust the training accordingly, practicing how to increase speed through legal maneuvers in the light wind.
I see how good training possibilities there are in Bergen with open water all year and of course I wonder why don´t you all fly here, and participate in their training camps?
Ingmar Westervik showed me around in the area and told me how the club plans were the dinghies should be placed and how parking and events are supposed to work. Lunch was served in the new clubhouse, very classy house in two different floors, with breathtaking views as you can see in the picture.
The meeting with the Organizing Committee was held in the old clubhouse and I was informed that this house will be used for the jury during the World Championship 2013. Ran Seilforening seem to be well prepared and it is likely that they can overcome all the challenges that will come in a good way.
The landscape of Bergen consists of only rocks and finding a good spot for campers and tents are really a challenge. They have a location in mind, but it is still too early to know if they will have access to it. We discussed that it is difficult to find such a place within walking distance, but that it can also be ok to transfer by boat to the sailing site.
The same challenge exists when it comes to accommodation in hotels in Bergen City or if you rent a vacation house, you have to go by car to the sailing club, or maybe RIB. Since it is difficult to know how far it really is to different places, it was suggested that a contact person will be designated to answer questions about accommodation.
As usual, the World Championship will be held during a period of high pressure on accommodations, so you have to reserve in good time. Information will regularly be posted on their website www.zoom2013.no
Overall, my impression is that this will be an exciting World Championship in a very different and beautiful environment. With the right winds, it will be super good sailing in Bergen.
